Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V.
The roots of the “Johanniter” date back to the year 1099, when the Order was founded in Jerusalem and dedicated itself to caring for the sick and the needy. Even during the Reformation, there were close ties to Martin Luther and his circle: The Johanniter priest Nicolas Faber studied in Wittenberg, and the Johanniter also provided protection and lodging for Luther on his journey to the Diet of Worms. These historical connections continue to shape the special relationship with Lutherstadt to this day.
At Luther’s wedding, the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe brings history to life in a vivid way. A historical field hospital is set up in the Bugenhagenhof, offering insights into medical care in the early modern period. Scenic reenactments demonstrate treatment methods of bygone eras and bring historical medicine to life. The program is complemented by hands-on activities for families and children. In this way, the association combines historical reenactment with the Johanniter’s core values: to help, protect, and be there for others.
