The Boten­läufer Wit­ten­berg e.V. go back to a spe­cial idea from the Luth­er Year 1993. At that time, 30 ath­letes from Wit­ten­berg set out for Rome and covered around 1,715 kilo­met­ers in elev­en days – fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of Mar­tin Luth­er. From this extraordin­ary action, a sol­id com­munity developed, which was offi­cially foun­ded in 1998. Since then, the Boten­läufer have traveled on foot to all the part­ner cit­ies of the Luth­er­stadt Wit­ten­berg and par­ti­cip­ate in numer­ous his­tor­ic­al and cul­tur­al events. On their jour­neys, they tra­di­tion­ally deliv­er greet­ing mes­sages from the city and pro­mote the Wit­ten­berg region.

For Luther­’s wed­ding, the mem­bers appear in his­tor­ic­al cos­tumes and act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in the fest­iv­al activ­it­ies, as well as in pro­gram events and parades. Their camp provides insights into the life of trav­el­ing mes­sen­gers of past times.
