Trade
A market like 500 years ago
In the streets and courtyards of the Old Town, the historic market comes to life. Merchants and traders from near and far offer their wares for sale — just as they did in Luther’s time. Browse through the finest goods, fragrant teas and herbs in Coswiger Strasse and Schlossstrasse, feel soft furs and the finest leather, discover artistic ceramics, beautiful toys and fine jewellery. Those who like to defend themselves will find cutting and thrusting weapons as well as skilfully crafted bows. And, of course, there are period costumes to transport you back to the time of the Reformation.
Culinary delicacies round off the market experience: game specialities and smoked fish from the region invite you to enjoy them, accompanied by freshly tapped beer and regional wine. In the historic Cranach courtyard, a cosy campfire with plenty of seating provides an atmospheric break in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the festival. Let yourself be enchanted by the special atmosphere, experience traditional crafts and savour the delicacies.
The legacy of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora comes to life right in the heart of the historic old town, at the Luther House. Although the Luther House is currently being renovated, key exhibits from the exhibition can be viewed right next door in the Augusteum in the special exhibition ‘Literally Luther. Facets of a Reformer’ in the Augusteum next door. During the festival, the courtyard of the Luther House is transformed into a place of joie de vivre and love. Here you can dance, celebrate and feast in a beautifully decorated ambience. The historic buildings and the extensive garden provide the perfect backdrop to get up close and personal with the story of Martin and Katharina.
